WCID Wednesday: Reproductive rights and clean banking

Happy Wednesday, Shit Givers.
One fun thing to know about me is I’ve been waiting like a decade for Civ VII. IYKYK. Goodbye, children!
Let’s go.

Fortify Virginia
Everyone’s favorite commonwealth has frustratingly bizarre legislature and election schedules.
In even-numbered years, the General Assembly meets for 60 days. In odd-numbered years, it meets for just 30. Sure!
And in Virginia, state-wide elections frequently occur in off-years from federal elections, like this year, when the governor and state house are up for grabs and everyone is kind of still exhausted.
Is this any way to run a state? Probably not! Do we have to work with what we’ve got for now? Yep!
One feature WCID has that doesn’t really exist anywhere else is the ability to find and be heard about state and local legislation.
We’re a hilariously small team, building out state-by-state as fast as we can (PSA: we could definitely use some more state policy nerds to volunteer), but for today, because the clock’s ticking, we’re focused on Virginia.
Last week, Virginia’s General Assembly passed the crucial “crossover” mark, which is not in fact a Highlander reboot, but the day when all legislation switches chambers.
It’s go time. Here’s what we’re fighting for today:
Constitutional amendments
As you may have heard, Virginia is still — by very slim majorities in the house and senate — basically the last stand for reproductive rights in the south. Let’s make it a fundamental right.
We’re fighting to remove VA’s one-man, one-woman marriage definition to measure up to Obergefell — and go even further.
And more:
Require coverage for contraception
Support offshore wind training and jobs
Establish and require 12 weeks of paid family leave
If you’re a Virginia resident, drop your home address into the app and then take 5 minutes to call your reps and fight for a better Virginia with our Be Heard scripts.
PS: Not a Virginia resident! 1) Bummer 4 U and 2) Please forward to someone who is!

Make America Healthy Again: Sure, Susan Collins predictably folded, but every call counts. The confirmation vote may be tomorrow. Let’s (do everything we can to) stop RFK’s campaign now. (go)
Stop inadvertently funding fossil fuels, pls: Congrats to everyone who’s used bank.green to move their money somewhere that isn’t contributing to this shitshow (go)
Invest in farms because that’s fun: Farm VC is a one-stop shop to a) get funding or b) help finance US farmland that works with regenerative agriculture (go)

The implications of USAID’s demise run deep and very, very wide, from food security to girls education, PEPFAR distribution, and even incomplete clinical trials abroad.
Why is why I’m so goddamn enthused to see so many of you choosing to step up and help feed people across the world, tonight.
Join them with our Donate to Food Security search (which includes the US, because you may have noticed the war the richest guy in the world is waging on poor people everywhere).

That’s it for this week — we’re back to the grind to get these new features launched (and a nice new coat of paint!).
