WCID Wednesday: More moms in office, right now

Plus: Companies shouldn't be able to share your location, donate directly to teachers in need

Happy Wednesday, Shit Givers.

First — huge thanks to Willow for jumping in to write 90% of today’s WCID Wednesday. Life, man.

Just a few weeks left in calendar 2024. Lots of folks still need help. They need you. And then you need to rest up, because 2025 is gonna be on one.

Btw - lots more to come here in Q1, but you can now save WCID as a bookmark right on your phone’s homescreen — with a shiny icon! Great work, Conor!

On iOS: Go to whatcanido.earth, hit the arrow button at the bottom of the screen, and scroll down to Add to Home Screen (as seen below). Voila! (and no, I have no idea how Android works — best wishes/warmest regards!).

Let’s go!

  • Donate: Millions of Americans care for an aging, ill, or disabled loved one, in addition to their full-time job. Caregiving is incredibly exhausting, unpaid, and 24/7. The Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers is providing the data to advocate for policy that provides support for caregivers (go)

  • Be Heard: Senator Warren is reintroducing the Health and Location Data Protection Act to ban data brokers from selling sensitive location and health data that threatens the safety of people trying to access basic healthcare. Let’s get it passed (go)

  • Learn: The world is overwhelming right now, to put it mildly, and adding the stress of the holidays isn’t helping anyone’s anxiety. You know what really does help though? Meditating. Seriously - check out this guide to meditation to get started (go)

  • Donate: Being a teacher is hard enough without having to pay for basic teaching supplies out of pocket. Find a classroom to support with DonorsChoose (go)

  • Invest: Your money is your power — align it with your values and find deforestation-free investment options using the resources at Deforestation Free Funds (go)

  • Learn: There’s a global shortage of health workers, and that gap is expected to grow. We can fill it by training community health workers — take this online course from Harvard Medical School to learn how (go)

  • Volunteer: Join your local period supply program to get involved with ending period poverty in your community (go)

  • Donate: Support healthcare workers responding to humanitarian emergencies worldwide with Project Hope (go)

Together With Nike

Despite my best efforts to keep our life manageable, my kids participate in 6200 activities every single day, and, again, despite my best efforts to freeze them at a particularly delightful age, they keep growing. And eating. And growing.

So we keep having to buy new shoes and, in this case, cleats for my oldest (who then passes them down to his siblings). He and his friends are big Nike die-hards, so I’m thankful to Nike for supporting today’s WCID Wednesday.

(He still can’t beat me in a race, though)

  • Donate to disaster relief. This is a top search week after week for good reason. Find frontline organizations doing on-the-ground work in your state, and all over the world (go)

  • Learn about global health. Building better global health infrastructure would prevent millions of deaths globally every year. What’s more worthwhile than that? (go)

  • Donate to food security and hunger. Support the folks that are getting food on the table for hungry families tonight (go)

  • Buy an air quality monitor. Indoor air pollutants can be 2-5x higher than outdoor pollutants. Get the tools that will tell you when it’s time to open a window (go)

  • Donate to agriculture — that is, regenerative, sustainable agriculture that improves nutrition, helps local economies prosper, and supports ecosystems (go)

  • Learn and Be Heard: Local leaders have the power to remove barriers and incentivize home electrification so that we can keep this party going. The Local Government Electrification Policy Menu from Rewiring America will show them the way (go)

  • Volunteer: If you’re over 60 and looking for ways you can use your political and economic power to leave the world a better place, join Third Act (go)

  • Donate: There’s no denying that the healthcare system isn’t working for many people. For a, ahem, productive way to help, donate to the HealthWell Foundation, which gets underinsured patients access to critical medical treatments they otherwise can’t afford (go)

That’s it. Take care, send us some soup recipes.
