🌎 Today's the day.

What can you do?

Shit Givers,

It’s another big day in a very big month for us.

Our extremely tiny team has been busting our asses for almost two years to bring you something fucking extraordinary, something I’m just so proud of, and now it's here:

Our new app: "What Can I Do?"

I am so thankful for everyone who got us to this place, but especially our tiny little team.

Built with our own bootstrapped, bleeding bare hands (there's no VC’s or AI here), our app is designed to most efficiently answer the question we get asked the most:

Or: What the hell can you do — at any given time of day, or life, or with whatever resources and skills at your disposal — to make a real, impactful change on world-changing issues?

The answer’s simple: use "What Can I Do?"

Why? Well:

Our (web!) app is your one-stop-shop for taking action on the issues you give a shit about.

With just a few taps, you can:

  • Discover vetted, high-impact actions, causes, organizations, and candidates tailored to your interests

  • Build trust and connect with other Shit Givers to follow their lead, amplify your own efforts, and build a community of unhinged, vigilante change-makers

  • Access a wide range of options to get involved, from donating and volunteering to learning and generally raising hell

  • Track your progress, build your action portfolio, and see the tangible impact you're making

Why? Because web search is fucked.

It's compromised by ads, fake reviews, influencers, corrupt power systems, disinformation, and SEO bullshit.

But What Can I Do? cuts through the crap.

Donate. Volunteer. Organize. Learn. Invest. Get Funded. Get Help. Be Heard.

Some backstory.

For some lucky folks, engagement is a choice. For many, many others, it’s a fight for survival.

And that means we all need to put our bodies and our skills to use. In the streets, at your polling locations, at PUC and school board meetings, at work, on the playground, at your HOA meetings, in bed, on your phone.

I’ll say it again: we’re not reinventing the fucking wheel here.

People have been coming together across space and time for decades and centuries to fight for what they deserve, and what other people a million miles away deserve, living Michelle Obama’s recent plea to just fucking do something.

Well, we made an app, Mrs. Obama, where every action is researched and curated by a human with a transparently high threshold for bullshit.

The app itself is simple in the front — playful and intuitive, even, hiding a back-end that is robust and flexible (read: a huge pain in the ass).

You can grow or narrow your search at any time, or filter results for whatever resources you have at your disposal.

And it goes further: in the event of, say, a hurricane, or a Supreme Court somewhere taking away bodily autonomy, we can surface the most reputable actions you can take to respond to those, in a matter of minutes.

There are no new ideas here.

Many, many allies have built and continue to operate resources like these.

But What Can I Do? isn’t a reading list. It’s not a donation hub. Or a volunteering platform. It’s not a “Call Congress about vaccine equity” tool. It’s not a trusted, rudimentary social network. Or a collection of the best courses on global health or educating girls.

It’s all of them. It’s the kitchen sink.

That's how we got nice things, that's how we get more.

Our World in Data

We're applying (cough — layman's) behavioral science at micro and systemic levels, and leveraging co-benefits and threat multipliers to power Compound Action.

You asked, so we’re giving you what you need to tear down legacy barriers to behavior change from the outside, so from the inside, it's easier and more affordable for other people to get the fuck out and adopt change in their lives.

Remember: It’s not just about making change. It’s about making change easier to make.

Whether you're passionate about climate, food and water, public health, education, or beyond, What Can I Do? provides a clear path to meaningful action.

Don’t have the gusto to actually go to another city council meeting after QUITE the day? Great! Call them. From your underwear.

Excited to organize with a local clean air group, but you’re terrified it’ll be a waste of time or turn into some sort of creepy Kool-Aid situation?

Good instincts! This is a safe place -- What Can I Do? only shares the most reputable candidates, actions, and organizations on the ground today, giving you myriad ways to support them.

Remember, you didn't start this fire, and gatekeeping is bullshit, but individual actions contribute to a third of necessary climate solutions, so let's fucking go.

— and don’t forget to invite your friends.

What Can I Do? is social by design, and with transparency in mind. Every public profile is securely verified by our partners at Stripe.

By connecting with other (real) Shit Givers, we can rebuild trust among each other -- which would be fuckin' great right about now -- influence social norms, and build positive action flywheels throughout your city, school, state, and planet.

Multisolving for the win.

You won’t find everything here.

This isn’t Google. You won’t find every answer here, and you also won’t find a single sponsored link.

But rest assured: we’re reviewing and adding new actions every single day.

Are we missing some key actions, people, and organizations? Undoubtedly.

Let us know, and we’ll put them through the ringer and see what comes out the other side. Because we’re hell-bent on this thing giving you the right answer, not all of the answers.

Do we have features to build? Obviously. We’re extremely small. Be patient. We’re hustling.

Ready to do this?

Before we dive in: Huge, endless thanks to Willow, Daryl, Conor, our Ukrainian friends at Tubik, Casey, Tejen, Andrew and Special Sauce, Kevin, Tyler and the team at beehiiv, all of our beta testers, and of course, the most supportive wife and kids that a person could ever possibly imagine or deserve.

The reality is, this might all crash and burn.

But it’s just v1, it’s just day one, it just might be the work of my life, and I’m so thankful for all of your endless support to get us here.
